We went sea and cave diving in Kupang. It was incredible to see healthy coral reefs so close to town. We even encountered dolphins in the Kupang Bay.
Although it was awesome to see Kupang underwater, diving in Alor is much nicer with better visibility, and so I advise that you spend more time diving there. You can find my post about Diving in Alor here
Cave diving in kupang was, however, the high point of our trip to Kupang. There is a place in the cave where salt water mixes with sot water, which feels like a whole new world. If you love diving, you don’t want to miss this. Donovan is the only operator, and he is incredible. He is also well-versed on the region as he has been living there for more than a decade and gave us many helpful tips on what to visit in central Timor.
If you have a few more days in East Timor, read my article about going off the beaten track in central Timor. This article also contains practicle tips about getting to Kupang and places to stay.
Many amazing diving destination are within a direct flight of Kupang so also consider diving in Alor, Komodo and Maumere
Have you ever dove in Kupang? I’d love to hear from you! You can leave a comment below.
Yes, I dived with Donovan last year. Terrible climb up and down the cave entrance but the dive as absolutely worth it for my first ever cave dive.
There are some critters there as well, including a shrimp and a moray eel. The remnants of sea life which died thousands of years of ago made it very interesting too and great for photos.
Shame there’s so much rubbish in the waters.
