Capella’s Japan debut opened 22 March 2026 in Miyagawa-cho: 89 rooms by Kengo Kuma, six private-onsen suites, and front-row seats at a theatre that has trained Kyoto’s geiko for over a century.

Kyoto already has an Aman, a Four Seasons, a Ritz-Carlton, a Park Hyatt and a Six Senses — the most crowded luxury field in Japan. So Capella’s Japan debut, timed to the cherry-blossom peak on 22 March 2026, needed something none of them could copy. It found it in Miyagawa-cho, one of the city’s five working geisha districts, steps from 800-year-old Kenninji temple: the hotel is part of a three-building project that includes the restored Kaburenjo Theatre, for generations the closed training ground of the district’s geiko and maiko.

The Theatre Is the Point
Every Kyoto luxury hotel sells proximity to geisha culture; Capella built its project around the culture’s own building. Guests get front-row seats at Kaburenjo performances and private ochaya encounters with maiko through the Capella Curates program — access that money alone hasn’t bought in this district. The architecture plays the same respectful game: only four storeys, and details reclaimed from the elementary school that stood here, from the science room’s pendant lights to the music room’s flooring.

The Rooms Worth Booking
Fifty square metres is the entry size — generous for Kyoto, where 40 sqm often counts as a suite. The rarities are the six Onsen Suites: private hot-spring baths in the city centre, water trucked in daily from the source. Premier Theatre Rooms overlook the Kaburenjo itself, and the top-floor Capella Suite frames Yasaka Pagoda against the Higashiyama ridge, looking straight down the lane the geiko walk to their evening engagements. I know this brand from the inside: my stay at Capella Ubud in Bali — Bill Bensley’s tented jungle camp — showed a group that treats each property as a one-off rather than a template, and Kyoto is clearly cut from the same philosophy.
Tip: SoNoMa by SingleThread took bookings before the hotel opened and sells out weeks ahead — reserve dinner the moment your stay is confirmed, not on arrival. Autumn foliage season books hardest of all.
