Cruise Review: Atlas World Voyager cruise in Antarctica

I had the opportunity to go on a cruise to Antarctica with Atlas and wanted to share my review of the trip. I’ve included many practical tips to help you make the most of your Antarctica experience, as well as many photos. It’s difficult to comprehend the beauty of Antarctica until you’ve been there, but I’ll do my best to convey its magnificence to you with those photos.

How to get to Antarctica?

Altas Antarctica cruises depart from Ushuaia. Atlas is one of the few cruise lines that includes a plane ticket from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. They also offer a night at the Intercontinental Hotel in Buenos Aires the night before, so you only need to find a flight to Buenos Aires and the rest of the trip is taken care of. Buenos Aires is a cool city, so if you have the time, I even recommend getting there two or three days before. ( see below for my review of the Intercontinental hotel in Buenos Aires)

Atlas Antarctica cruise review ( of )

A representative from Atlas will greet you in the hotel Lobby and give you all the info about the charter flight for the next day. The advantage of having Altas organise the charter flight is that your luggage is taken care of. You give them in Buenos Aires the night before and find them back straight in your cabin! This is truly a fantastic service that made the journey much more straightforward.

The next morning, I began my day at 4 a.m. for breakfast. It was served between 3.45 and 4.45 on level -1. It was very simple, with Tea, coffee, and two mini croissants per person. I don’t eat gluten and was told to wait for the gluten-free option to arrive. It never arrived, so I left for the airport with an empty stomach.

Tip: If you have dietary requirements or want a more solid breakfast, skip the Intercontinental breakfast. There is a good cafe at the airport called Pain Quotidien, where you can get food and drinks. It is located opposite gate 27. So, if you want to sleep a bit longer, you can skip the Intercontinental breakfast altogether and buy better food at the airport.

The departure was exceptionally well organized. They assigned people to different-coloured groups and staggered the departure time. I was in the last group, leaving at 4:50 a.m.

Tip: the bus left on time, so don’t be late.

They distributed the boarding passes on the bus, which took 30 minutes to get to the airport, as there was no traffic so early in the morning.

The airport itself was a bit chaotic. Atlas was able to get us in the helpful fast-track security. Again, the Atlas team did a fantastic job funneling everyone through the airport.

Tip: If you fly out individually from the domestic airport in the morning, arrive extra early. We saw a few people missing their flights because of the long waiting time at security.

The plane was a charter flight from Flybondi. If you were expecting a luxury private jet, you might be disappointed. It was old and not so clean, but it was on time, and the staff was friendly. They gave us a sandwich and drinks, so it did the job.

Upon arrival in Ushuaia, each person had to retrieve their luggage, get it through the control, and return it to the Atlas representative, who would take it to the boat.

Within 15 minutes, everyone was on their busses, ready to explore the National Park Tierra del Fuego. The tour lasted from 11.30 until 3 pm, and at 3 pm we were led to the ship for boarding

Boarding the Altas World Voyager

Atlas World Voyages, a recent addition to the luxury adventure cruise market, operates under the umbrella of its parent company, Mystic Cruises. The fleet includes three upscale yachts: World Voyager, World Traveller, and World Navigator. The three boats are similar. I cruised on the World Voyager, which this article is about, but the other ships are similar. These adventure vessels are compact, measuring 10,000 gross tons, and have been built with Antarctica and the Arctic in mind. They can accommodate a maximum of 198 guests. Polar expeditions are capped at 160 guests, and I was told the ship was full during my trip. Despite being a full trip, it never felt crowded.

The ship itself was comfortable and well-equipped, providing all the amenities one could ask for in such a remote and untouched destination. The low number of people ensured that it never felt crowded. Finding a place to sit or relax was always easy, whether at the restaurant, lounges, or sauna.

Boarding was effortless. We were invited to sit in the Atlas lounge and offered a glass of champagne and appetizer while one of their staff took care of the check-in process. After a copy of our passports and credit cards, we were shown to our cabins, and the adventure began.

Review of the Atlas World Voyager ship

The Atlas World Voyager had three decks accessible to passengers and two decks dedicated to cabins. Decks 3,4 and 7 hold most of the common spaces. Decks 5 and 6 hold the cabins.

Deck 4 – The restaurant

On Deck 4, you will find the main restaurant. The restaurant has tables of 2 to 10 people so that you can dine alone or with other people you meet onboard.  The restaurant is large enough so that every guest can eat simultaneously. There is no early or late diner shift on Atlas, and no bookings are necessary. Just show up whenever you are ready. An outdoor area wasn’t used for dining during our Antarctic cruise as it was too cold. But it was a great spot where everyone would run if whales passed by during dinner. They also used the outdoor area for a few outdoor cooking stations.

Atlas Antarctica cruise review ( of )

Deck 4 – The Atlas Lounge

You will find the inviting lounge area on the other side of the restaurant. This spacious and comfortable space is perfect for passengers to relax, socialize, or take in the breathtaking views. The lounge is tastefully decorated and furnished with cozy seating arrangements, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance. A pianist often performs there before dinner, and many guests would gather there. Passengers can enjoy a wide selection of beverages from the bar and engage in conversations with fellow travelers, making it a vibrant hub of social activity onboard.

Most nights, this is where the evening animation takes place. From a crew talent show to pop music singing or Salsa dancing, there was something to watch if you were not ready to go to bed yet. Atlas is a small boat, and most passengers come to discover Antarctica, so don’t expect a huge range of night entertainment.

IMG

Deck 4 – The auditorium

Moving further along Deck 4, you will come across the auditorium. This multipurpose space is designed to accommodate various onboard activities and events. This is where all the educational lectures take place.  With state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment and comfortable seating, the auditorium ensures that every event is engaging and enjoyable. The lectures are filmed and can be watched from your cabin if you feel too lazy to go to the auditorium.

Tip: The day review at the end of each day was fun, educative, and entertaining. Don’t miss it.

Deck 4 –  The reception area and the exploration team room.

This is the central hub where passengers can seek information, assistance, or guidance from the ship’s staff. The exploration team was always on hand to discuss anything we had seen during the day. I wasn’t expecting the boat to have such a large group of scientists and conservationists onboard to guide us. They are passionate people, and their presence enhanced our cruise and our understanding of Antarctica.

Deck 4: The gym and sauna

The gym is small but an excellent place to work out during the Drake Passage crossing if the sea is quiet.  What impressed me the most was the stunning panoramic views offered by the large windows in the gym. Exercising while overlooking the vast expanse of the ocean was truly invigorating and made each workout session a memorable experience.

It is worth noting that the ceiling is relatively low, so if you are tall, it can feel claustrophobic.

Don’t miss the sauna. It offers breathtaking views, providing the perfect backdrop for relaxation. It is also a great way to warm up quickly after an expedition outside.

If you are not afraid of the cold, there is also a running track at the top of the boat.

Tip: Be careful, as the running track can be slippery when wet.

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

Deck 4 – The spa

The spa onboard the Atlas World Voyager was a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation. The spa facilities were luxurious and well-appointed, featuring a range of amenities, including steam rooms, saunas, and relaxation lounges.

I indulged in a massage, and it was tailored to my preferences and left me feeling pampered and refreshed. I get massages at least once a week at home and found the therapist surprisingly good for a boat spa.

Tip: If you want a spa treatment, book a few days ahead, as it is often fully booked, especially during the crossings.

You can see the pricelist below:

This area at the front of the boat has heated seats so it is a great area to watch the landscape outside while staying warm

Deck 6 – The Bridge

The bridge is located on Deck 6. It was open to the public a few times during our trip so you can go and have a look at how the boat works

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

Deck 7- The observation lounge

It is a popular gathering point for passengers who want to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding scenery. This spacious lounge is designed with large windows that provide unobstructed ocean views, allowing passengers to immerse themselves in the beauty of Antarctica. Comfortable seating arrangements and a tranquil ambiance make the observation lounge the perfect place to relax, read a book, or appreciate the stunning vistas. ( or enjoy one of Atlas’s delicious Cocktail)

Atlas antartica boat review ( of )

Deck 7 – The pool, Jacuzzi, and running track.

Adjacent to the observation lounge is the pool area. The pool on Deck 7 offers a refreshing oasis for passengers to take a dip and enjoy a swim while onboard the Atlas Voyager. However, the pool and outdoor restaurants are closed during our Antarctica trips due to the cold weather. The jacuzzi is, however, open.

Despite the cold, the running track was surprisingly popular on the boat. It is pretty special to do your morning run surrounded by glaciers.

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

Deck 3 – The mudroom

This is a critical area of the ship as it is the departure point for all the expeditions. It has been purposed built for polar expeditions and is one of the reasons why Atlas ships are a great option for Antarctica expeditions. Each passenger is assigned a locker where you can store your boots, jacket, and other outdoor equipment. It is well designed and allows Altas to perfectly organize 150 people gearing up for winter conditions and getting onto Zodiacs efficiently. It also ensures you don’t bring wet boots and clothes to your cabin.

We were offered a hot towel and a hot tea upon returning from our expeditions. After the last expedition of the day, you could spice it with rum!

Review of the Cabins on Atlas World Voyager

All the staterooms are on decks 5 and 6

Review of the Deluxe balcony cabin on Atlas World Voyager

My experience in a deluxe balcony cabin on a cruise ship was perfect. The cabin was spacious and well-designed, and I was very comfortable during my nine-night cruise.

Atlas antartica edited ()

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

The balcony offered breathtaking ocean views, allowing me to enjoy the fresh sea breeze and stunning Antarctica landscape. Having a balcony on an Antarctica cruise isn’t as valuable as on a tropical cruise, as it is often too cold to stay outside for long. However, I really enjoyed being able to pop out from time to time. You never know what you will see in Antarctica, as on one of my balcony moments, I spotted Orcas playing just below the ship and playing with the bow waves.

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

The bed was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful night’s sleep after a day of exploring and enjoying the various activities on board. The bedsheets were exceptionally soft.

The cabin also had ample storage space, including a large closet and drawers, allowing me to keep my belongings organized throughout the journey.

Tip: there is a big gap under the bed where you can store your suitcases during the cruise

Atlas antartica boat review ( of )

The mini-fridge was convenient and replenished with drinks daily. If you want more drinks, you can also order anything from the bar menu, which will be delivered free of charge to your room. There is also a Nespresso coffee machine and a Kettle for tea.

The large flat-screen TV provided entertainment whenever I wanted to relax in the cabin. The live TV did not work very well, as connectivity in Antarctica was not great, but they had plenty of on-demand movies to watch.

Plugs are US type so bring an adaptor if you need one. USB chargers are conveniently located through the bedroom.

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

I watched a few lectures about Antarctica given by the expedition team when I was too lazy to go to the theatre.

Tip:  The TV has a channel with a map showing where the boat is currently and some meteorological information. So you can see how cold and windy it is before you step out of the ship for the expeditions and can adjust your clothing in function.

Atlas Antarctica cruise review ( of )

Review of the bathroom

The bathroom was clean and well-maintained, and the shower had excellent water pressure. It offered a rain shower, a massage shower jet, and a handheld shower. There is also a small seating area in the shower. I was happy to sit down during my shower when we encountered rough seas during the Drake Passage crossing.

I really enjoyed the Loccitane amenities. The boat provides shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizing lotion.

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

Tip: It was essential to check the temperature before entering the shower, as it tended to start cold but warmed up quickly.

Binoculars are available in the room for you to use during the cruise.

Atlas World Explorer Antartica ( of )

Are the horizon rooms worth it?

Atlas offers Horizon rooms with a panoramic window that opens up along the room’s length. Those rooms are a bit larger than the balcony room, but not much. During an Antarctica cruise, you probably wouldn’t want to open the panoramic window as it would cool down your room too much. So, having a Horizon room gives you a larger window and a slightly larger cabin but no balcony. Despite the cold weather,  I still enjoyed stepping outside on my balcony for a few minutes daily.

Tip: This is probably the most crucial tip in this article. Ask for a cabin at the center of the ship, not at the front. The front moves a lot more, which can be difficult during the Drake Passage crossing. I had a cabin at the front of the boat, just below the bridge, and the ups and downs were very uncomfortable when we hit waves on the return trip.

Review of the food on Atlas World Voyager.

If you have read some of the reviews on Atlas, you will see quite a few mixed reviews about the food.

The food on the Atlas Cruise during my Antarctica cruise was an absolute delight from start to finish. Most meals exceeded my expectations. Whether it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner, there was always an extensive selection of dishes catering to a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences.

Breakfast

The breakfast buffet was a feast for the senses and might be among the best breakfasts I have seen on any cruise ship. There were many options, including freshly baked pastries, cereals, yogurts, fruits, and made-to-order omelets. There was even a carving station with Pata Negra Iberico ham! The quality and variety of the breakfast offerings were impressive. Freshly squeezed juices and a wide selection of grains, nuts, and fruits are available for the healthy conscious. They have a delicious bread and pastry chef onboard.

Lunch

Lunch was served buffet style. The lunch menus featured a variety of international flavors, including Mediterranean, Asian, and American dishes. In addition to all the dishes, an extensive salad bar was available daily.

Dinner

Dinner on the Atlas Cruise was enjoyable. The main dining room showcased a sophisticated atmosphere with impeccable service. The menu featured a combination of classic favorites available daily and a changing selection.

There was a plant-based menu and also a Portuguese specialty menu that changed every day. Some dishes were truly spectacular, while others were just OK. I haven’t had one bad meal on Atlas; you can see they invest in the food quality and ingredients. From succulent lobster and tender steaks to vegetarian options and decadent desserts, I looked forward to dinner every night.

Tip: The beef dishes were consistently good. If you wish, you can order more than one appetizer or main.

Paula’s pantry

In addition to the main dining options, there was also a casual eatery called Paula’s Pantry. It provided convenient and delicious meals when I wanted a quick bite during the day.

Paula’s pantry is a gem. It offers fresh fruit juices and delicious coffee at any time of the day, all included in the cruise fare. I loved their ham and cheese toasty! Snacks and fruits to go are also available. They also make fancy tea, coffee, and latte. It was one of the busiest points of the ship!

Room service

While there’s room service available, the options are limited. But it’s nice to have, especially when you want to relax in your room. The Wagyu burger from room service is a definite highlight!

Overall, the food on the Atlas Cruise was an absolute delight. The variety, quality, and presentation of the meals surpassed my expectations.

Review of the service on Atlas World Voyager

The staff on the Atlas World Voyager went above and beyond to ensure an exceptional experience for every passenger. Not only were they friendly and efficient, but they also made an effort to create a personalized and welcoming atmosphere. From remembering your name to anticipating your needs, their attention to detail was remarkable.

With a staff-to-passenger ratio of 1 to 1, you can expect a level of service that is unparalleled. This means the staff can dedicate their full attention to each passenger, ensuring their every need is met promptly and professionally. Whether assisting with room cleaning, serving meals, or providing information at the reception desk, the staff’s efficiency and attentiveness were truly impressive.

One of the standout features of the Atlas World Voyager is its expedition team. Comprised of 14 marine biologists, this team had extensive experience and knowledge in their field. They were experts in studying penguins, whales, and icebergs, and they shared their expertise with the passengers throughout the voyage. From informative lectures to guided excursions, the expedition team added an extra layer of excitement and educational value to the journey.

How is the internet on Atlas Cruise in Antarctica?

Antarctica is one of the most remote places on earth, but you can stay connected thanks to Atlas’ internet service. The internet is, however, limited and expensive. Each guest gets 1GB of data at the beginning of the trip, free of charge. You can purchase additional data packets at 80 USD per 1 GB if you run out.

The internet is slow but good enough for email and WhatsApp. I was even able to do a few video calls on WhatsApp. The internet also got better as the cruise progressed. I suspect many people ran out of data credit, so fewer people were using the internet.

How to do laundry on an Atlas cruise in Antarctica?

Luggage on the charter flight is limited, but Atlas World Voyager provides a convenient laundry service.

What is included in Atlas Antarctica cruise?

Atlas provides superb value for money, and with three ships in operation in Antarctica, it could disrupt the market.

The cruise I did had promo prices starting at 4500 USD. This is an incredibly low price for the Antarctic. If you add on all the inclusion of an Atlas Antarctica expedition, it is superb value for money. Other similar cruises usually go for well over 10000 USD.

In addition to including charter flights and all the activities, the Atlas cruises include dining and unlimited beverages like beer, wine, cocktails, specialty coffee, and fresh pressed juices. An in-room stocked mini-bar and 24-hour room service are also part of the fare, as are gratuities and emergency medical evacuation insurance.

Further, guests can participate in shore landings, sightseeing safaris by zodiac, and a polar plunge for no additional cost. Guests on Polar Expeditions also receive a complimentary parka.

The only extras you need to budget for are the kayak tour ( not to be missed), the internet, premium drinks, and the Spa.

What are the activities available on Atlas cruises in Antarctica?

It is important to note that an Antarctica cruise is very weather-dependent, and the itinerary that we followed might be very different from what you will experience during your Antarctica cruise. Antarctica is a vast area, and there are plenty of options for landing and zodiac rides.

During our 9-night Antarctica cruise, we spent five nights cruising and four days exploring Antarctica.

While in Antarctica, Atlas offers two expeditions per day ( weather permitting). The expeditions are either Zodiac cruises, landings, polar plunges, or Kayaking. Everything is included in the price of the cruise except for the Kayak, which costs an extra 200 USD. Make sure you don’t miss any of those expeditions. They were all spectacular, and you can read more about them below.

Zodiac Cruises:

One of the highlights of an Antarctic cruise is exploring the icy landscapes up close on Zodiac cruises. We would board small inflatable boats and navigate through the icy waters, getting closer to glaciers, icebergs, and wildlife. These excursions offer a unique and thrilling experience, allowing guests to witness the pristine beauty of Antarctica. While it can be challenging for some people to step on the boat, the Atlas team was conscientious and assisted us in getting in and out of the boat.

Landing:

When the weather is favorable, it is possible to go and walk on the 7th continent. These provide a unique perspective and allow a closer connection with the environment and the wildlife.  Throughout the entire journey, the safety and well-being of the passengers were of utmost importance to the Atlas World Navigator team. They ensured that all necessary precautions were taken to protect both the travelers and the fragile ecosystem of Antarctica.

Cruising and watching the landscape:

The boat cruises along the most beautiful landscape. Antarctica is home to diverse wildlife, including penguins, seals, whales, and seabirds. Even from the boat, I saw plenty of animals, so don’t forget to look outside even when you are in your cabin. As we sailed through the icy waters, I was constantly in awe of the breathtaking landscapes surrounding us. The dramatic icebergs, towering glaciers, and vast expanses of untouched wilderness were awe-inspiring. It felt like stepping into a different world, untouched by mankind.

I saw a pod of orcas playing the ship’s bow while navigating, and it was common to see penguins and fish jumping out of the water along the boat. Whether watching penguins waddle along the shore or witnessing a majestic whale breach the surface, these encounters are truly unforgettable, even more so because they are unexpected.

Overview of our itinerary cruising in Antarctica.

I joined a nine-night cruise at the end of February. Although it is considered late in the season, we were lucky to have many sunny days while in Antarctica. We also made quite a few landings and hiked the seventh continent.

Please note that each cruise is different. The captain chooses the itinerary based on the weather and what other ships are doing as boats try to stay out of each other’s way. I talked to passengers cruising with another Atlas boat at the same time as us. They had a totally different cruise, and none of our stops overlapped! However, they really enjoyed their cruise, too.

Day 1:Visiting the Tierra del Fuego National Park

Boarding and discovering the ship

Upon arrival in Ushuaia, we seamlessly transitioned into a Tierra del Fuego National Park bus tour while our luggage was conveniently transported directly to the ship.

While I anticipated more walking and outdoor time during the Tierra del Fuego tour, it primarily consisted of a bus journey through the park with a few 20 or 30 minutes stops. Nevertheless, it served as a pleasant activity until we could board the vessel.

The park is known for its wild beauty –vast plains, rivers, and towering mountains. As I settled into my seat, the scenery outside was mesmerising. Snow-capped peaks and lush forests passed, painting a picture of untamed wilderness. The bus ride gave me a glimpse into the park’s diverse ecosystem, home to unique wildlife like foxes, guanacos, and even penguins along the coast. Despite the lack of walking, I was captivated by the rugged landscapes and the sense of adventure they evoked. With each turn of the road, I couldn’t help but feel a growing excitement for the experiences that awaited me on board the vessel, knowing that Tierra del Fuego’s natural wonders were just a taste of what was to come in Antarctica.

The boarding was easy and relaxed. We were directed to the lounge, where staff gathered our information. After a glass of champagne, I was shown to my cabin, where I was happy to see my suitcase was already waiting.

Later in the day, we had the safety drill. It was a bit more extensive than most cruises I have been on, and we learned about life jackets, lifeboats, and where to go in an emergency.

The rest of the afternoon and evening were mainly spent exploring the ship and checking out its amenities!

Days 2 – 3: Crossing the Drake passage.

I had read horror stories about crossing the Drake Passage, known as one of the strongest seas in the world. A few days before the cruise, I started checking the Windy app on my phone to get an idea of what to expect. It didn’t look promising. The Drake Passage is known for its unpredictable and treacherous conditions. However, on this particular day, the sea was surprisingly calm.

We spent the first morning of the Drake passage going through the safety and zodiac briefings. We met the expedition team. They are a fantastic team of 14 people. Many of them are scientists and marine biologists.

To make the most of our time at sea, the Atlas expedition team organized a series of lectures and activities to keep passengers engaged and entertained. From informative talks on Antarctic wildlife and history to photography workshops and movie nights, there was always something to do during the crossing. These activities not only helped pass the time but also deepened our appreciation for Antarctica’s unique ecosystem.

As the ship approached the Antarctica peninsula, the landscape became more dramatic. Towering icebergs floated serenely in the water, creating a surreal atmosphere.

Crossing the Drake Passage in calm seas was a good experience. Spending two days with little to do was a great way to familiarize yourself with the boat and overcome jet lag.

Day 4: First icebergs and landing

Our first Antarctica stop was Cierva Cove. It was like entering a new world of icy wonders and fascinating wildlife.

When we hopped onto the Zodiac boat, we were in for a treat. The ship smoothly sailed through icy waters, surrounded by massive icebergs and sparkling glaciers. The whole place felt peaceful and calm.

Cierva Cove itself was absolutely stunning. The ice had different shades of blue and beautiful patterns carved into it by nature. The towering glaciers, flowing down into the sea, were mind-blowing.

But that’s not all—we saw our first adorable penguins waddling along the shore, playing, and sliding on the ice.

Our guide on the Zodiac boat was fantastic. He knew so much about the area and shared interesting facts with us.

Our second expedition for the day was to Mikkelsen Harbor; this time, we landed in Antarctica. It was snowing lightly, which added to the ethereal feeling. As soon as we set foot on land, we realized it was a special place.

We were delighted to observe hundreds of adorable penguins waddling along the shore. Some penguins were shedding and patiently waiting for their feathers to regrow, and three seals were lazily sleeping on the other side of the island.

Hiking to the summit through the snow-covered terrain, we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. The tranquillity and silence (except for the penguins’ noise!)  of this remote location were humbling, allowing us to connect with nature on a profound level.

Tip: Although the temperature was around 1 degree Celsius, it felt much warmer than on the morning Zodiac ride because we were hiking. So, my tip is to put on all your warm layers when going on a Zodiac ride but dress a bit lighter for hikes and landings.

Day 5 – amazing sceneries, Lemaire passage, icebergs galore and Polar plunge!

We didn’t think it could get any more beautiful, but it did.

We navigated through the Lemaire passage at 6 am. It was a sunny day with excellent visibility and a clear blue sky. The Lemaire Passage is one of the most popular places in Antarctica.

As the Atlas world voyager ventured through the icy waters, the towering cliffs of the Lemaire Passage surrounded us, creating a breathtaking and awe-inspiring atmosphere. Despite the early morning start, the sheer beauty and grandeur of the landscape left us speechless.

While sailing through the Lemaire Passage, we were fortunate to witness a leopard seal floating on an iceberg. We couldn’t help but admire its beauty and the harmony between the seal and its icy perch.

Throughout the journey, we were constantly amazed by the abundance of wildlife in this remote region. Penguins gracefully swam alongside our boat, and seabirds soared above us with the sunrise in the background.

It was a truly spectacular pre-breakfast experience, and most passengers woke up early to enjoy it in the explorer lounge.

Tip: it was freezing cold on the deck, so to enjoy the passage experience, don’t hesitate to collect your warm jacket from the mudroom.

After our early start, we took a Zodiac tour around Pleaneau Island.

As we hopped on the Zodiac and glided through the icy waters, we were immediately surrounded by the most spectacular icebergs you could ever imagine. I’m talking about these massive chunks of ice that come in all shapes and sizes. Some were towering and majestic, while others were delicately sculpted and had a mesmerizing blue hue. It was like being in an art gallery curated by Mother Nature herself.

We were lucky enough to witness a few seals gracefully swim in the water, their bodies effortlessly gliding through the icy depths. Watching these powerful creatures in their natural element was a mesmerizing sight.

As we cruised around Pleaneau Island, I couldn’t help but be in awe of the beauty surrounding us. The majestic icebergs and playful seals created a magical atmosphere—a sensory overload in the best possible way.

In the afternoon, it was time for the polar plunge!

For the adventurous at heart, the Atlas World Voyager offers the thrilling opportunity to take a polar plunge. Guests can brave the icy waters and plunge into the Antarctic Ocean for a refreshing and exhilarating experience. This is a proper bucket list activity.

So, picture this – I’m standing on the edge of the boat above a near-frozen sea in Antarctica, surrounded by vast stretches of ice and snow. The air is crisp and biting, and I can feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins.

I can’t help but wonder if I’ve lost my mind. Who willingly jumps into freezing cold water in one of the coldest places on Earth? I’m about pushing my limits and trying new things, so here I am, ready to take the plunge. The Atlas team hooked me up to a security harness.

With a deep breath, I gather all my courage and dive into the icy water. It was a shock! The cold hit me like a thousand needles piercing my skin. My body immediately goes into shock, and every inch of me screams in protest. It’s like being trapped in a frozen nightmare, and I questioned my life choices at that moment.

But amidst the freezing agony, there’s a strange sense of exhilaration. It’s as if my body is awakened by the icy embrace, and I feel more alive than ever before. The adrenaline rush is crazy.

As I emerge from the frigid water, my body feels numb, but my spirit is soaring. I did it! I conquered the Polar Plunge in Antarctica! I ran straight into the sauna on deck 4 and warmed up quickly.

A staggering 93 people onboard took the plunge! (And everyone survived 😊 ) This made for lively dinner discussions afterward.

Tip: Do it. Don’t think so much about it before. Just looking at the smiles of people who have done it should convince you.  To warm up quickly after the plunge, go to the sauna or the Jacuzzi.

We then spent the rest of the days cruising through more channels. Mountains, glaciers, and sunset created the perfect dinner show. It was hard to concentrate on the food and the conversations with so much going on outside!

Day 6: Hiking glaciers

Our adventure began with an exhilarating ascent up Orne Harbour, navigating a winding road carved into the ice and snow. The slippery conditions added an extra element of excitement to the journey. But once we reached the top, I can only say, “Wow!”

The view from above was absolutely breathtaking. The sprawling glaciers and towering icebergs stretched as far as the eye could see, creating a mesmerizing landscape. It was like being transported to another world, a frozen wonderland that seemed almost surreal.

At the summit, we were treated to a delightful surprise – a colony of penguins resting and going about their penguin business. It was a joy to observe these adorable creatures in their natural habitat. They seemed unfazed by our presence, allowing us to witness their daily routines up close.

While some lucky individuals spotted seals near the water, I unfortunately missed out on that sighting. But that’s the beauty of nature, right? It’s unpredictable and full of surprises. Even without the seals, the experience of being surrounded by the majestic glaciers and the playful penguins was enough to leave a lasting impression.

You need to be prepared for a slightly slippery journey, so this landing might be challenging if you have mobility issues. However, Atlas was very well organized, and over 100 people could climb up the slow, winding path with little queuing.

Tip: Make sure you take a walking stick. Atlas provides them. When going down, it helps to kick your heel into the ice/snow, which gives you a bit more grip. Keeping your arms open will also help you balance.

As the weather cooperated, we could do a second landing at Useful Island. From the moment our Zodiac arrived, we were greeted by the incredible sight of thousands of penguins. It was a sight to behold as they waddled and hopped along the rocky terrain, going about their daily activities.

We had another exhilarating climb through loose rocks and ice. This was the most challenging hike of the trip. While it required some effort and careful footing, the panoramic view from the top was absolutely breathtaking.

As we made our way back down, we were fortunate to encounter a group of seals relaxing and swimming at the bottom. It was peaceful as they gracefully glided through the water, occasionally popping their heads up to breathe.

Throughout our time on Useful Island, the penguins were a constant source of entertainment. Their energy and enthusiasm were contagious as they walked up and down the rocky slopes, and it was a joy to observe their interactions.

Useful Island was my favorite landing of the whole trip. The number of penguins was incredible.

After such an active day, we were all starving.  As we sat down to enjoy our meal, the sunset cast a golden/ pink glow on the snowy mountains and glistening icebergs. It was a scene of unparalleled beauty. Add numerous whales passing by, and you will have the perfect background for dinner. It was a remarkable display of nature’s grandeur, as we witnessed not just one or two but an astonishing ten whales breaching simultaneously.

The combination of the delicious meal and the mesmerizing scenery created an atmosphere of pure magic. We couldn’t help but feel a deep gratitude for witnessing such a magnificent display of nature’s wonders.

Day 7: Kayaking with whales and Antarctic Fur seals fighting seals

It was already our last day in Antarctica, and I had the chance to kayak.

Kayaking is available on Atlas for an extra 200 USD. I am glad I did it, as it was the highlight of my trip.

Tip: Sign up in advance, as the guests who sign up get priority for Kayaking. There is limited opportunity to Kayak. Atlas can take 12 kayakers on each tour. The conditions need to be good for it to be safe. Kayaking is, therefore, not offered every day. During our trip, it was offered only three times, allowing 36 people to Kayak.

My Kayaking trip was to Portal Point. We ventured into a bay during our adventure and were fortunate to spot some magnificent humpback whales in the distance. Excitement filled the air as we cautiously paddled towards them, ensuring we maintained a respectful distance of 200 meters to give them space.

To our amazement, the whales suddenly started to approach us. Four humpbacks began circling and diving under our kayaks, creating a breathtaking spectacle. We were captivated by the sheer beauty and grace of these majestic creatures. Despite being momentarily unable to move, we were mesmerized by this once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

Thankfully, everyone remained safe, and no one got flipped over by the whales. Some of us even felt the exhilarating water spray from the whales’ blowholes, leaving us slightly damp.

After this incredible encounter, we continued our kayaking journey along the bay and were greeted by the sight of a few fur seals lazily resting on icebergs. It was surreal to witness these playful things from our kayaks against the backdrop of the stunning Antarctic landscape.

One iceberg was magnificent. The ice was so old that it became darker. We were told it could be close to 20000 years old!

Tip: When Kayaking in Antarctica, dress warmly and get warmers for your feet and hands. We were on the water in freezing conditions for over 2 hours. The Atlas team provided us with dry suits and neoprene gloves that helped a lot, but my hands and feet still got cold.

Our last trip expedition was a The Zodiac cruise around Enterprise Island. It was the perfect ending to the trip.

One of the highlights of the cruise was spending time with four humpback whales. They were putting on a show for us, displaying their immense power and grace. It was hard to determine if they were playing or fighting, but their loud and active behaviors captivated everyone on board.

As we continued our journey, we were surrounded by the mesmerizing beauty of the icebergs. Each iceberg seemed to have its own unique shape and color, creating a surreal landscape.

During the cruise, we also stumbled upon the wreck of a whaler boat, which served as a poignant reminder of the region’s rich history.

We were delighted to encounter a playful group of Antarctic fur seals on our way back. These young males engaged in energetic bouts of mock fighting as they learned the skills necessary for adulthood. Their playful antics brought a sense of joy and amusement to everyone on board.

Overall, the Zodiac cruise around Enterprise Island was a truly unforgettable experience. The sightings of humpback whales, the beauty of the icebergs, the glimpse into history with the whaler boat wreck, and the playful fur seals all combined to make it a perfect finale for our expedition. It was a good summary of the wonders that await those fortunate enough to explore this remarkable part of the world.

Day 8 and 9  – Returning to Ushuaia and crossing the Drake again

Leaving day was sad because we didn’t want to go! Unfortunately, our passage back was not as smooth. We experienced rough seas and ferocious winds up to 140 km per hour.

Leaving behind the sheltered confines of Antarctica, we entered the Drake Passage during the night. Immediately, the ship was engulfed by a tumultuous expanse of 6-meter waves and strong winds. The ship pitched and rolled, a true battle against the elements.

The following day, the atmosphere onboard was electric, with excitement and apprehension. Passengers clung to handrails, seeking solace in the company of fellow adventurers. The experienced crew, well-versed in navigating these treacherous waters, provided reassurance and guidance throughout the journey, ensuring our safety.

As we progressed through the Drake Passage, the dining room became more and more quiet as many people were seasick

Tip: If you get seasick, the onboard doctor can administer anti-nausea injections. The passengers who got the injection were noticeably better, so don’t hesitate to see the doctor as soon as you feel seasick.

Despite the challenging conditions, a sense of camaraderie developed among the passengers. The ship’s crew organized activities and lectures, distracting us from the rocking of the boat and providing insights into the region’s history and science.

Finally, the ship emerged from the turbulent waters into the calmer seas near Ushuaia.

On the last morning, we took a bus to the airport for our charter flight from Ushuaia back to Buenos Aires. The goodbyes were heartwarming. I left the trip with many new friends who had bonded over the incredible landscapes and wildlife we witnessed during our incredible Antarctica adventure.

Review of the Intercontinental Buenos Aires – Pre-cruise stay

The Intercontinental Hotel in Buenos Aires is situated in the bustling business center of the city, but it provides a peaceful haven for travelers. When I arrived the day before my cruise at 10 a.m., the hotel staff informed me that if I wanted to check in early, I would have to pay almost the full cost of the room, amounting to 120 USD. I was taken aback because I had never encountered such a high fee for early check-in before.

In light of this, I decided to take a walk around Buenos Aires and grab some lunch. The city offers plenty of landmarks to explore, such as the iconic Obelisco, the charming neighborhood of San Telmo, and the lively streets of Puerto Madero.

By 2 p.m., my room still wasn’t ready, so I headed to the business center to get some work done. Unfortunately, the center was not well-equipped for work, with only two desks that had computers. There were no desks where I could plug in my laptop, and the staff office in the center was quite noisy, making it hard to concentrate.

Finally, at 4 p.m., I was able to check into my room, which surprisingly had two beds despite my solo travel. Room 709 was located in front of the elevators, and I could hear them going up and down loudly throughout the night.

Tip: When checking, ask for a room away from the elevator with the bed configuration you need.

Intercontinental Buenos Aires boasts a comfortable room with a plush bed and duvet. Although I slept well despite some elevator noise, I would suggest that the hotel management take measures to reduce the noise level for a better guest experience. Moreover, I would recommend the hotel reconsider its policy of charging for early check-in to provide more flexibility for guests who arrive on early flights. Overall, my stay provided a good night’s sleep, and I hope the hotel considers these suggestions to enhance their guests’ experience in the future.

In conclusion of my review of Atlas World voyager cruise to Antarctica

This Antarctica trip is one of the most beautiful trips I have ever done. The landscapes are stunning, with the shapes of the icebergs and various shades of blue. Being able to witness that grandeur and the crazy amount of animals living there is a privilege that I will not forget. I did the nine-day cruise and wish I had chosen a longer one because nine days were not enough. The Atlas boat is a superb boat for the Antarctica cruise. It is luxurious, comfortable, and has excellent food. But even more important, it has been purposed built for those Antarctica adventures and has a dedicated team of biologists to help you make sense of it all.

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip on the Atlas World Voyager and hope to be able to cruise with them again.
