How to Get to Koh Jum Beach Villas

Koh Jum is located roughly 1 hour away from Krabi International Airport (KBV). There are two main transit options available to reach the resort:

Option 1: You can drive for about 45 minutes from the airport to Laem Kruat Pier, followed by a 30-minute private longtail boat ride directly to the island. The hotel concierge can seamlessly arrange this entire transfer for you.

Option 2: You can take the public passenger ferry departing from Krabi Town or Phuket. Note that this ferry option generally runs only once daily during the high travel season.

I opted for the second option as I wanted to take some time to explore Krabi Town and the iconic Railay Beach beforehand. Krabi serves as an incredibly scenic stop-over for a night or two, featuring welcoming locals, beautiful river views, and a fascinating bat cave to discover.

The local ferry ride was basic but completely pleasant. It drops passengers off right on the shoreline of the beach adjacent to the Koh Jum Beach Villas estate. TIP: Wireless internet connectivity is delivered via an individual cellular hotspot mobile device provided in each villa. While highly portable, network speeds can fluctuate and tend to slow down noticeably during peak evening hours when cell towers face heavy traffic. If you require seamless high-speed internet for remote work, it’s wise to purchase a local tourist 5G SIM card at the airport upon arrival.

Koh Jum Beach Villas features a curated collection of 18 boutique villas ranging from intimate 1-bedroom layouts to expansive 5-bedroom luxury estates. While the absolute beachfront villas are highly recommended for optimal views, keep in mind that a few of the entry-level 1-bedroom garden options sit relatively close to one another, offering slightly less architectural privacy.

Dining and Restaurant Review

The main resort restaurant sits adjacent to the central public swimming pool. The culinary quality is outstanding, and the pricing is very reasonable for a luxury eco-resort property. I looked forward to sitting down for an early dinner each evening, enjoying a cold beer while watching the sun dip below the horizon.

The menu provides a well-balanced mix of traditional Southern Thai specialties and classic Western fare. The kitchen also hosts regular themed dining nights with unique, rotating menus. Having sampled a few local beach shacks nearby, the culinary standard at the resort was consistently superior, prompting me to eat on-site for most of my stay.

The one standout exception nearby is a local spot aptly named Friendly Restaurant. True to its name, the hospitality was incredibly warm and the local Thai food was spectacular. To find it, simply walk left along the shoreline past the local day spa, turn left onto the access road, and walk for about 5 minutes; the restaurant will be visible on your right.

Resort Amenities and Beach Conditions

While most individual villas feature private splash zones, the resort provides a large central public pool for all guests, situated right beside the restaurant pavilion. The lounge space also features an excellent curated library filled with interesting novels—perfect for beach reading.

Additionally, the resort offers complimentary use of bicycles along with complimentary snorkeling masks and fins for underwater exploration. Koh Jum Beach Villas stands out unmistakably as the most polished and charming resort operation on the island.

The natural beach directly outside the resort is highly photographic, particularly at golden hour when the dramatic outcroppings of black volcanic rock contrast beautifully against the crashing waves.

TIP: Due to the extensive volcanic rock formations lining the immediate shoreline, swimming safely in the ocean is highly dependent on the daily tide cycles and is generally best at high tide. If you are looking for a stretch of sand with fewer rocks for wading, simply take a short walk past the restaurant toward the northernmost villas.

Activities Across Koh Jum Island

Boasting quiet fishing villages and a remarkably slow pace of life, Koh Jum remains beautifully preserved and largely unbothered by mainstream mass tourism. The island only integrated with the mainland electrical grid about eight years ago, a milestone that gently modernized local life while preserving its heritage charm.

Geographically, the mountainous northern half of the island is locally referred to as Koh Pu, whereas the flatter southern region retains the name Koh Jum. The island is home to three sleepy fishing villages, which feature a modest selection of family-run seafood restaurants, local handicraft shops, and basic tour operators. The residents are incredibly warm and always happy to chat or point you in the right direction.

Taking a complimentary resort bicycle out to explore the villages is highly recommended; the ride to the nearest settlement takes roughly 20 minutes along a gently rolling road. While the route isn’t overly steep, the tropical humidity ensures a workout, so try to avoid cycling during the peak midday sun.

For nature enthusiasts, the interior of the island is covered by a dense, primary rainforest that can be explored via half-day or full-day jungle treks. To spot the local wildlife safely, it is highly recommended to hire an experienced local guide. A tracker can also guide you through the intricate mangrove ecosystems lining the coast via a traditional longtail boat. A two-hour boat charter offers ample time to navigate the serene mangrove channels.

TIP: Deep inside the mangrove channels, the humidity draws out mosquitoes; ensure you apply a liberal amount of natural insect repellent before setting off.

For day trips further afield, the world-famous Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park is located within a comfortable 1-hour speedboat ride, offering exceptional coral reef snorkeling sites. Nearby Maya Bay has famously undergone strict environmental closure periods to promote marine conservation. The ecological recovery program has been a resounding success, with local blacktip reef shark populations returning to nurse in the shallow turquoise waters.
