Nestled amid the cerulean waters of Indonesia’s archipelago, Ternate graces the northern side of the Maluku islands, beckoning as the gateway to Halmahera. If a day in Ternate piques your interest, here’s a quick guide to where to stay and what to see. I was in Ternate for 2 nights before a diving cruise on the Ambai liveaboard going to Halmahera

Where to Stay in Ternate?

Luxury hotels are a rarity here so if you need luxury, Ternate is not the place for you and you might be better off stopping over in Makassar. During our stay, we stayed at Muara Hotel and Malls, supposedly the best hotel in town. Conveniently situated above a supermarket, the hotel boasts a friendly staff. Yet, cleanliness was somewhat amiss, and signs of mold tainted the room. Breakfast was good with an array of Indonesian dishes. Notably, Ternate doesn’t receive many foreign tourists, and finding English speakers can pose a challenge.

What to Do in Ternate?

We opted to rent a car with a driver from our hotel for 5 hours at a cost of 500,000 Indonesian rupiahs. A day tour in Ternate unfurls a journey spanning ancient forts, dramatic volcanic landscapes, serene lakes, and enchanting beaches. The island’s small size permits a thorough exploration in 4-5 hours, covering the main attractions. Getting lost in town also offers an enticing option. The welcoming inhabitants of Ternate greet foreign visitors with immense excitement, punctuated by warm smiles. Their friendliness knows no bounds.

Batu Angus: Where Lava Meets the Sea

Our day kicks off at Batu Angus, an entrancing spectacle showcasing nature’s unbridled force. Translated as “burnt stone,” Batu Angus is a lava flow cascading dramatically into the azure sea. This wonder etches an unforgettable mark, juxtaposing the obsidian black of cooled lava against the vibrant blue of the ocean. Standing at this geological marvel’s edge, you’re transported to a world where Earth’s primordial might is vividly displayed.

Jikomalamo: Sunset Serenity

The journey continues to Chico Malamu, a beach adorned with ebony sands shimmering under sunlight. Abundant cafes and restaurants line the shoreline, inviting you to indulge in local coffee while soaking in the relaxed beach ambiance. But the pinnacle of Chico Malamu emerges as daylight wanes – the mesmerizing sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, the serene seascape amplifies the moment’s beauty, capturing an experience beyond mere words.

Pantai Tolire: Where Lake Meets Ocean

Close by lies Pantai Tolire, a unique blend of elements crafting a picturesque panorama. Here, a tranquil lake gently caresses the ocean’s fringes, embraced by the velvety expanse of black sand. The backdrop of a majestic volcano adds an element of drama to an already breathtaking scene. Strolling along the shoreline, the harmony between these components stands as a testament to nature’s awe-inspiring craftsmanship.

Danau Tolire: A Mountaintop Mirage

A brief uphill drive unveils Danau Tolire, a lake nestled amid the mountains. Accessible by car, this caldera is a favorite stop for travelers seeking panoramic vistas. Reaching the caldera’s rim reveals a sight that defies description – an immaculate lake framed by lush forests, embraced by the distant volcano’s imposing silhouette. The tranquillity enveloping the area creates a moment of serenity that’s irreplaceable.

Historical Intrigue: The Ancient Forts Janji and Oranje

Concluding this comprehensive day tour, a visit to Ternate’s historic forts is a must. These venerable structures bear witness to the island’s storied past, shaped by the ebb and flow of empires and trade routes. Delving into the forts offers a peek into Ternate’s historical significance, transporting you back in time to an era when these strongholds played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s destiny.

Ternate, with its blend of natural wonders and historical treasures, unfolds a kaleidoscope of experiences that beckons exploration. From the raw potency of volcanic landscapes to the tranquillity of lakes and beaches, this Indonesian gem weaves a day tour that’s both diverse and unforgettable. As you absorb the myriad sights and sounds, Ternate’s whispers of its history invite you to become a part of its vibrant present-day narrative.
